Our Founder: Marcus Thompson
Marcus Thompson is a Detroit, Michigan native who discovered his passion for startups in college when he co‑founded an app to connect classmates into study groups. After earning a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a minor in Entrepreneurship, he moved to Silicon Valley and joined a tech accelerator, where he saw firsthand how founders outside major hubs lacked clear, practical guidance.
Our Story
When I went off to college, I dove into Computer Science and picked up a minor in Entrepreneurship, hungry to build something of my own. In my sophomore year, I teamed up with fellow students to launch a study‑group app. We weren’t thinking big at first—we just wanted to solve a small problem on campus. But that project sparked something in me: I realized how powerful it felt to turn an idea into a working solution that genuinely helped people.
After graduation, I headed to Silicon Valley and joined a tech accelerator. Immersed in that high‑energy environment, I met founders chasing big dreams—but I also noticed a gap: outside the Bay Area and other major hubs, many aspiring entrepreneurs struggled to find clear, practical guidance. They needed straightforward advice, rooted in real experience, not fluff or jargon.
One quiet evening in my tiny San Francisco studio in 2017, I poured a strong cup of coffee, pulled out a napkin, and sketched the first concept of The Startups Point. I imagined an online space where anyone—no matter their location or background—could read honest founder stories, follow simple step‑by‑step guides, and find templates and tools to move their ideas forward.
